IIAS Completes First Research Spaceflight Mission with Astronaut Kellie Gerardi on Virgin Galactic’s ‘Galactic 05’

Las Cruces, New Mexico  (November 2, 2023): International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) today announced the completion of its first research spaceflight with Astronaut Kellie Gerardi on Virgin Galactic’s  ‘Galactic 05.’ The mission achieved multiple milestones, showcasing how spaceflights are broadening access to space for a diverse, global community of astronauts.

During the spaceflight, our payload specialist and researcher, Kellie Gerardi operated three payload experiments focused on fluid dynamics, human biometrics, and continuous glucose monitoring. Read more about these experiments HERE. Kellie also evaluated the entire researcher experience in order to improve science and operational protocols for future IIAS-sponsored research spaceflights and training programs.

Virgin Galactic and IIAS have collaborated closely on payload integration and in-flight choreography to maximize the science and technology advancements that will be gained from the research conducted on the Galactic 05 mission. IIAS researchers Yvette Gonzalez, Dr. Aaron Persad, and Dr. Shawna Pandya were on-site at Spaceport America for payload integration support and will focus on post-flight data analysis.

“Today is a celebration for everyone at IIAS who have tirelessly worked to make this flight happen”, said IIAS Executive Director Dr. Jason Reimuller, “In addition to meeting our research objectives, our inaugural suborbital flight sought to demonstrate that the future of space will be forged by professionals of many backgrounds, all driven by the same insatiable desire for scientific exploration that will inspire future generations of STEM professionals.”
