Bio

I am Mohana Sai Akula, a final-year master’s student in Astrobiology and Space Science at the Amity Centre of Excellence in Astrobiology, Amity University Mumbai. My academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Botany, and Chemistry from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and has led me to pursue my passion for space exploration and human spaceflight.

Throughout my studies, I have had the incredible opportunity to participate in international Analog Astronaut missions, such as Mission Pegasus at the Lunares Research Station in Poland and Mission Ceareluna at the Analog Astronaut Training Centre. In these missions, I took on key roles as a Crew Medical Officer and Astrobiologist, contributing to vital research in psychological monitoring, hydroponics-based lunar germinations, and the effects of isolation on human physiology.

My passion for space science is complemented by over four years of experience in the social and youth development sector. During my time at Rubaroo, a youth development organization in Hyderabad, I facilitated programs on interfaith dialogue, gender, comprehensive sexuality education, and active citizenship. Working with adolescents and young people from various socio-economic backgrounds across India has greatly enriched my perspective and strengthened my commitment to inclusion, diversity, and social justice.

One of the highlights of my journey was being part of the world’s first analog mission that included a wheelchair crew member, where I learned the importance of adaptability and problem-solving in diverse and challenging environments. I was also honored to receive the Best Oral Presentation Award at the National Space Science Symposium (NSSS 2024) organized by ISRO, for my presentation on human body functions during analog astronaut missions.

I am fluent in English, Hindi, and Telugu, and I am currently learning German. I am driven by a deep intellectual curiosity and a desire to contribute to the advancement of human knowledge and exploration, both in space and on Earth.
