Bio | Casey is a 17 year veteran of the US Air Force and Air Force Reserve, having served as an officer and navigator. He holds the aeronautical rating of Master Navigator with over 3,700 hours in reconnaissance and tactical transport aircraft. Native to Washington State, he graduated from Central Washington University in 2003 with a BA in geography and commissioned in the service as a lieutenant. He then attended Joint Specialized Undergraduate Navigator Training (JSUNT) at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas where he earned his wings in 2004. His first assignment was in Oklahoma, flying on Boeing E-3 AWACS surveillance aircraft. In 2007, he transferred to the Reserve forces and accepted as assignment in Youngstown, Ohio flying on Lockheed-Martin C-130s. Since then, he has served as flight commander supervising new aircrew and become an instructor. He is a veteran of the campaigns in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and West Africa. Casey has extensive experience in analog space environments, having taken part in 2 NASA Human Research Program studies. In 2014, he was selected to lead the 2nd Hawaii-Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), a 120-day isolation experiment. During HI-SEAS, Casey led a team of 5 international scientists, managing the tasks prescribed by the PI and mission support element. His crew planned and executed over 60 simulated EVAs on Mauna Loa volcano. In 2016, Casey took part in the 10th iteration of the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) as a mission specialist at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas. That mission simulated a 30-day deep space trajectory to a near-earth asteroid, where he conducted simulated EVAs and geoscience experiments. Casey is proactive in the space community, having taken on a number of roles with advocacy organizations. In addition to Project PoSSUM, Casey is a member of the National Space Society’s (NSS) committee for chapters, an NSS Space Ambassador, Training and Membership Services officer for the Association of Spaceflight Professionals (ASP), and formerly an ambassador for the Suborbital Applications Research Group (SARG). |
