Bio

Hello fellow space nerds, scientists, and enthusiasts,

My name is Nathan Grinalds and I am an aspiring astronaut. Originally from Washington State, I have lived in North Carolina for 4 years, Florida for 3.5 years, New Orleans, LA for 1 summer, and Albuquerque, NM for 1 summer during my time as an undergraduate/graduate student. Outside of my life as a student, I love rocketry and I’m working towards my Level 2 high-powered rocketry certification after my experience competing at the Spaceport America Cup in 2019. I also enjoy playing the piano (classical, jazz, pop), painting, cooking, and staying active (especially out in nature). I currently spend much of my time training and competing at triathlons, marathons, bike races, etc.

Academic Background

I am PhD student at the University of Florida studying Materials Science and Engineering. My current research projects focus primarily on electronic devices including quantum dot LEDs, position sensitive detectors, organic semiconductors, nanomaterials, and building-integrated photovoltaics. During my undergraduate studies in chemistry and physics, I was fortunate to perform astrophysics research on hot subdwarf stars, primarily through the use of spectroscopy and light curve analysis. Additionally, I performed environmental science research on zooplankton and organic/physical chemistry research on fluorescent molecules using laser spectroscopy and molecular dynamic simulations. This past summer, I interned at SolAero by Rocket Lab, the world’s leader in manufacturing high efficiency III-V solar cells for space vehicles. I developed a contactless and automated solar cell inspection technique which leveraged machine learning to automatically detect defects in multijunction solar cells. I have also volunteered as a materials scientist consultant to asteroid mining company Planetoid Mines for the past few months and hope to contribute more to their future projects. I aspire to continue to using my interdisciplinary academic background to contribute to the exploration and study of space to quench my insatiable passion for the exploring the unknown.
