Bioastronautics: EVA Space Suit Evaluation

IIAS leads bioastronautic research pertaining to space suit and bio-monitoring technologies in partnership with Integrated Spaceflight Services, the National Research Council of Canada, the Southern Aeromedical Institute, and Survival Systems USA. The associated IIAS certificate program provides a practical, hands-on, and immersive education geared to the professional interested in a career in bioastronautics. The IIAS Professional Certificate in Bioastronautics with  Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Concentration provides a practical education for the professional interested in EVA space suit operations. The certification involves all aspects of the testing and evaluation of Final Frontier Design EVA space suits in analog terrestrial, microgravity, and underwater environments.

Areas of Study

Lunar Surface EVA Space Suit Evaluation

IIAS leads novel space suit tests in simulated lunar gravity environments using a novel gravity-offset system instilled at the lunar test facility at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Montreal. In these space suit test and evaluation campaigns, prototype tools and procedures are tested and validated in gravity-offset conditions where human performance and procedural effectiveness may be safely evaluated.

Microgravity EVA Space Suit Evaluation

IIAS leads novel space suit tests in simulated microgravity environments using a novel gravity-offset system instilled at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Montreal. IIAS uses a simulated airlock representative of the Quest Airlock on the International Space Station to conduct tests of space suit performance and also of tools that would be used in an orbital EVA, such as on station.

Underwater EVA Space Suit Evaluation

In an exclusive partnership with Survival Systems USA, IIAS leads studies involving analog underwater environments, considering both nominal and contingency scenarios. Presently, IIAS students learn the techniques required to evaluate EVA space suits in analog environments.

The Professional Certificate in Bioastronautics (EVA Concentration)

The IIAS Professional Credential in Bioastronautics is a 16-credit certification designed for the student or professional interested in a career in human space flight involving the design, integration, test, and qualification of technologies involving the human interface in spacecraft. IIAS offers two concentrations of study in Bioastronautics: IVA Space Suit Test and Evaluation and EVA Space Suit Test and Evaluation. These concentrations are largely independent of each other and may be taken sequentially or concurrently. Prospective applicants must have successfully competed the requirements for AST 101 (Fundamentals of Astronautics). Extravehicular Operations courses lead to qualification to conduct underwater testing of EVA space suits and include EVA 101: Life Support Systems, EVA 102: Remote and Space Medicine, EVA 103: Extraterrestrial Geology and EVA Tool Development, and EVA 104: Gravity-Offset EVA Space Suit Evaluation. Upon completion of the prescribed courses, the candidate should petition for graduation through the link below.
