Bio

Rodrigo Carvalho Santiago has been selected by IIAS to join the Astronaut Scientist Candidate Class of 2018.

He reported for duty in 2019 for AST 101. A native of Volta Redonda- RJ – Brazil he has performed high attitude edge of space flights in space environment conditions with the need for an IVA suit.

He was a researcher and advisor for the MIT / T.E.S.S (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) DATA ANALYSIS TESS GI Program lead by Padi Boyd at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

During quarantine he was part of the Folding at Home team creating the infrastructure to create a supercomputer through peer-to-peer networking. In March 2020, the network had a more powerful processing volume and speed than the world’s top 7 supercomputers combined.

Rodrigo also joined a team to provide solutions for NASA Human Land System project for the new generation of toilets in lunar, martian and orbital environments.

He is so project manager of the NMMS 1 (National Manned Stratosphere Station Program). The project involves the construction and operation of the NMSS-1 (National Manned Stratosphere Station), which can accommodate 6 to 8 crew members. The station will carry out research and experiments near the lower mesosphere for up to 8 days at the edge of space.

He was one of the chosen by UNITY / META for the development of applications for META QUEST 2 focused essentially on photo realistic simulations of Space, Lunar and Martian missions, where through his long experience as astronaut analog he can contribute to the reduction of errors in long distance missions.

He is co-chair for Space for All Nations at IIAS (International Institute for Astronautical Sciences) in order to increase the access to space and mainly to create relationships through the Institute with governments, private companies and international institutions.

Rodrigo is also Director of AI Research at UoPeople where he works aimed at accelerating the development of artificial intelligence for manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (Precise Positioning for Unmanned Vehicles: GPS & GNSS Receivers, Antennas & Inertial Systems), as well as autonomous craft such as the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS).

He is also one of the first civilian members of the SFA – SPACE FORCE association, a member of the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) and part of the WINGS – Pilot Proficiency Program – FAA (FAAS team).

He worked in several worldwide technology companies such as GOOGLE for StartUps, NEOGRID focus in Supply Chain Management (SOP and VMI), CLARO NET – Virtua Internet Provider, PEUGEOUT Automotive Industry, SARA LEE Corporation consumer-goods company, STANTON CHASE INTERNATIONAL/GRUPO FOCO RH Global Executive Search and many others.

Rodrigo was nominated one of the Top Men in Aerospace and Aviation to Follow on LinkedIn 2022.

Academic Background
  • Rodrigo graduated from Senai as a Network Engineering. He earned a BSBA in Business Administration from Univali,  BS in Physics in UNIEPS and in Computer Science from UoPeople in 2020. He also earned a MSc in Organizational and Industrial Psychology from PURDUE through Master Mind Institute, an MBA in Business Management from IBMI and mMsc Quantum Physics/ Quantum Mechanichs MIT (xPRO),

He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at AMU in Space Studies and holds several certifications as HARVARD Extension School in Data Science and Big Data, Space Suit Evaluation and Space Craft Egress IIAS, Flight Test Pilot NTPS and many others.

He has written several papers on quantum computing, MetaVerse, aerospace engineering, psychology in space, space research flights, flight safety, launch rescue, social inclusion, global action solution development and international education.

Mentor to many young people and adults to adapt to the demands of the market, knows the difficulties for candidates from underdeveloped countries to succeed due to lack of education and curricula poor in content for the professional market.

He teaches programming to young people interested in providing solutions to various areas of knowledge and guides them to institutions and companies that absorb him into the labor market.

Rodrigo has a motto that made him achieve all his goals:
